In a statement on Thursday, head of the ministry's Public Relations and International Cooperation Bureau Ristianto Pribadi said the agreement followed a 2024 memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the environment and forestry sectors.
"We appreciate the close and constructive cooperation between both parties during the preparation of this implementing arrangement," he said. "This agreement reflects our shared commitment to strengthening REDD+ implementation."
The ministry said the partnership aligns with Indonesia's commitment to achieving its FOLU Net Sink 2030 and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets.
"Going forward, the cooperation is expected to strengthen joint efforts to promote high-integrity climate action, sustainable forest governance, and long-term resilience," Pribadi said.
UNEP Climate Change Division Director Martin Krause said forests offer solutions to multiple challenges, including carbon storage, protection of communities and biodiversity, and sustainable forest management.
Krause said the agreement would strengthen collaboration in several strategic areas, including technical support for mobilizing results-based financing for REDD+ projects and improving readiness for carbon markets and implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Article 6 enables international cooperation on climate action and climate financing.
He also expressed hope for closer cooperation in developing social forestry, community-based enterprises, greenhouse gas mitigation efforts, and knowledge-based safeguards at national and sub-national levels.
