Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has formed special task forces to monitor the movement of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026.

Barantin Head Abdul Kadir Karding said the task forces had been established at regional technical executive units (UPT) and animal, fish, and plant quarantine centers (BKHIT) serving as major routes for sacrificial animal distribution.

"I chaired a meeting to ensure the establishment of task forces at each UPT and BKHIT serving as key routes for the movement of sacrificial animals," Karding said at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta on Thursday.

Karding said the task forces would ensure inspections were carried out properly from points of origin to transport routes and destination areas.

Barantin is implementing several risk mitigation measures, including analyzing livestock movement trends, evaluating previous obstacles, preparing facilities and infrastructure, strengthening regulations, enhancing cross-sector coordination, and intensifying animal traffic monitoring.

He added that patrols had also been expanded along illegal routes to prevent livestock smuggling.

"If we find any smuggling, we will destroy the animals and take action in accordance with quarantine procedures," Karding said.

He said the agency had not found any smuggling cases or detected infectious animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), lumpy skin disease (LSD), or anthrax.

"So far, no cases have been found. Previous reports also showed no cases," he said.

Karding said only one or two livestock animals had experienced minor health problems during transport and were immediately isolated and treated by veterinarians.

He stressed that Barantin would take firm quarantine measures against administrative violations or signs of infectious diseases.

"We do not want diseases linked to cattle or goats to suddenly emerge among the public," he said.

According to Barantin's Best Trust information system, cattle movements reached 198,925 heads from January to April 2026, up 70 percent year-on-year, while goat and sheep movements rose 77 percent to 103,216 heads.
