Posbankum must be fully utilized for mediation and, when disputes cannot be settled peacefully, for appointing advocates to support legal proceedings,Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung (ANTARA) - Indonesia has set up 83,980 local legal aid posts nationwide, the country’s law minister said on Wednesday, marking the largest expansion of community-based legal assistance aim at widening access to justice.
Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said the number matched the government’s 83,980 Red and White cooperatives, describing it as a historic milestone because legal aid posts had never before been established on such a scale.
The legal aid posts, known as Posbankum, have been created in villages and urban wards across the country to help residents settle disputes through mediation and secure legal representation when cases cannot be resolved locally.
Supratman said trained personnel, including paralegals and local mediators such as village heads and urban ward heads, were expected to maximize the facilities as part of public service and legal assistance efforts.
“Posbankum must be fully utilized for mediation and, when disputes cannot be settled peacefully, for appointing advocates to support legal proceedings,” Supratman said during an inauguration event for Posbankum across the Bangka Belitung Islands in Pangkalpinang on Wednesday night.
He urged village heads and urban ward heads nationwide to optimize the posts to ensure equal legal services for citizens, especially in communities with limited access to formal legal institutions.
Supratman said the government of President Prabowo Subianto remained committed to broadening access to justice as part of wider institutional reform. The Ministry of Law is monitoring Posbankum services through an integrated digital system linked to regional offices across Indonesia, allowing authorities to track cases in real time.
The system records where cases are handled, the types of disputes processed, and the officials responsible for resolving them, creating a national database aimed at strengthening accountability and improving legal aid delivery, Supratman said.
