Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said he would dismiss Customs and Excise Director General Djaka Budhi Utama if the latter is found guilty in a bribery case involving John Field, the indicted owner of Blueray Cargo.

While declining to interfere in the ongoing legal process, the minister stressed his commitment to taking firm action against the customs chief if any violations are proven, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to reform the customs office.

“I will not interfere in the trial process. Let us wait for the court’s decision,” he told reporters in Jakarta on Thursday, adding that Utama “should indeed be removed” if proven guilty.

The customs chief was mentioned during the May 6 trial of John Field, who was indicted for allegedly providing Rp63.15 billion (over US$3.5 billion) in bribes, entertainment facilities, and luxury goods to several customs officials in exchange for easing import inspections involving Blueray Cargo.

President Prabowo has instructed the finance minister to restructure the leadership within the customs office and warned against poor performance in the institution.

“It is vital that we strengthen the customs and excise office. Finance Minister, please immediately make changes if the leadership is not capable,” he said before 451 legislators and several government officials in Jakarta on Wednesday (May 20).

Speaking during a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR), Prabowo stressed that the government must remain committed to eradicating corruption, preventing abuse of power, and addressing practices that hinder economic activity.

He also underscored the importance of state institutions and officials working swiftly to provide effective public services and reform bureaucratic processes.

The president called on all ministries and state agencies to strengthen governance procedures based on professionalism and anti-corruption principles.

“We must dare to overhaul all our institutions. We need to continue building a strong government free from corruption,” he affirmed.

Prabowo also said Indonesia’s business climate remains affected by harmful practices, including illegal levies imposed on investors.

“Business actors are complaining about the large number of illegal levies,” he noted.

Against that backdrop, the head of state urged ministers and heads of state agencies to eliminate improper practices within the bureaucracy and take firm action against those involved.
