Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto believes Indonesia has a major opportunity to become one of the world’s leading shrimp producers, supported by the country’s vast aquaculture potential across several regions, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said.

In an official social media post cited in Jakarta, Teddy said President Prabowo on Saturday attended a shrimp harvest and reviewed post-harvest sorting activities at the Area-Based Shrimp Farming (BUBK) facility in Kebumen.

“At the shrimp farming site, which spans around 100 hectares, President Prabowo directly observed the harvesting process for vannamei shrimp as well as the sorting of the harvest before distribution to the market,” Teddy said.

He added that the head of state said Indonesia currently has a strong opportunity to become the world’s top shrimp producer given its existing potential.

Teddy highlighted the significant economic impact of the BUBK Kebumen project, noting that the facility consists of 206 pond plots and generates production value of around Rp67.2 billion (approximately $4.1 million) per cycle, with the potential to reach Rp134.4 billion annually.

In addition to its production value, the modern aquaculture complex has also created hundreds of jobs, he said.

Teddy further said that during the visit, President Prabowo emphasized that the government is developing a similar project on a larger scale in Waingapu, located in East Sumba.

The expansion of the shrimp farming project is part of the government’s strategic efforts to create employment opportunities, generate added economic value, and increase foreign exchange earnings through food exports.
