Beijing (ANTARA) - Indonesia renewed its commitment to global poverty alleviation initiatives as it assumed the role of deputy chair at the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD), a forum initiated by China.

Indonesia shares the deputy chair position with Ivory Coast, Brazil, Pakistan, South Africa, and Uzbekistan, while China holds the chairmanship.

“It is a great honor for me to convey Indonesia’s viewpoint regarding poverty alleviation. We share the same concern to strengthen inclusive development with China and other countries,” Deputy Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions Ahmad Riza Patria said.

Speaking at the inaugural GPPAD Committee meeting in Beijing on Wednesday (May 27), he underlined the importance of pursuing village-driven development, noting that Indonesia views rural regions as central to national food production and economic stability.

“With that in mind, the Indonesian government is committed to strengthening infrastructure development, basic services, food security, education, health, and community empowerment in villages,” Patria added.

He highlighted that, under President Prabowo Subianto’s administration, Indonesia had taken concrete steps toward rural development, reflected in the ongoing establishment of 83,000 village cooperatives, 5,000 fishing villages, the Free Health Check-up program, and the Free Nutritious Meals program, which has reached 60 million people.

“Through this forum, Indonesia welcomes every cooperation and will actively contribute to initiatives it endorses. Together, we work in solidarity to spur people-oriented development,” he affirmed.

The deputy minister told ANTARA that Indonesia is eager to learn from other nations, including China, to enhance the effectiveness of its poverty reduction initiatives.

He voiced Indonesia’s keenness to collaborate with China on administrative and practical spheres, citing Beijing’s strong record in poverty alleviation.

In the plenary session, Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong urged 53 GPPAD member states to align steps to accelerate global poverty alleviation.

“China will actively support GPPAD in strengthening policy dialogue, technical demonstration, and talent development,” he said.

Liu also highlighted the forum’s role in assisting developing countries to boost their poverty alleviation capacity through “small yet impactful” cooperation projects, noting that around 800 million people remained under global poverty lines in 2025.
