Advisor to the Minister of Forestry for Climate Change, Prof. Haruni Krisnawati, said in a written statement received here on Monday that sustainable forest management in Highland Papua and Papua in general must prioritize social aspects and local wisdom.
“Social values and local wisdom are integral to sustainable forest management in Highland Papua so that the intended goals can be achieved while optimally preserving and protecting the region’s forests,” she said.
According to her, there is currently a global climate agenda that will be aligned with the need for sustainable forest management in Highland Papua and Papua as a whole.
“The forestry sector, which in future planning is referred to as the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector, is targeted to contribute to achieving Indonesia’s emission reduction goals,” she said.
She explained that nearly 60 percent of Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emission reduction target is assigned to the FOLU sector. Therefore, cooperation among all stakeholders, including the central and regional governments, the private sector, academics, community groups, and the media, is crucial to support the target.
“Highland Papua’s forest areas remain relatively well preserved. Based on a presentation by the Highland Papua regional secretary, nearly 80 percent of the forest areas in the region remain intact and in very good condition,” she said.
She expressed hope that forest areas in Highland Papua could serve as a stronghold in protecting Indonesia’s tropical forests and help absorb global greenhouse gas carbon emissions.
Forest areas in Highland Papua cover 5.1 million hectares across eight districts, namely Jayawijaya, Lanny Jaya, Nduga, Tolikara, Yalimo, Mamberamo Tengah, Yahukimo, and Pegunungan Bintang.
