The program targets elementary and junior high school students in West Sumbawa, integrating environmental education with practical waste-management activities, according to a company statement Tuesday.
Students are encouraged to separate waste, apply the 3R principles—Reduce, Reuse and Recycle—and recognize waste as a resource that can be processed and reused.
AMMAN Vice President for Policy, Permitting and Social Impact Priyo Pramono said the program aims to strengthen schools’ role in building environmental awareness and changing student behavior.
“PPSS success is reflected not only in waste managed, but also growing awareness that waste has value when properly managed,” he said.
Teachers incorporate waste management into classroom lessons, while students gain hands-on experience in waste segregation and composting under the program.
Organic waste collected at participating schools is processed into compost at School Composting Houses, or RUMPOS, for school activities, community projects, agriculture and land reclamation.
The program has expanded from two pilot schools in 2022 to six participating schools, involving thousands of students, teachers, parents, community members and employee volunteers.
From 2022 to 2025, the program managed more than 150 tons of organic waste and produced over 50 tons of compost. AMMAN said it prevented about 11 tons of emissions in 2025.
Several participating schools have independently adopted the waste-management model and received Adiwiyata Awards at provincial and national levels, AMMAN said.
The company said its School Waste Management Program recently received the top recognition in the Waste Management category at the 2026 Lestari Awards.
The award recognized the program’s contribution to environmental education and waste-management practices in schools, according to the statement.
