Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Manpower Minister Yassierli said social protection for old-age informal workers, who are a mainstay of the national economy, must be a top priority for the government and other stakeholders.

"This is a concern for all of us, in ensuring they also continue to receive social protection, because every citizen has the right for social protection," Yassierli said in a statement here on Monday.

He said one of the government's current challenges is the domination of workforce structure by informal sector workers. He mentioned that of Indonesia's roughly 155 million workforce, about 60 percent work in the informal sector.

According to Yassierli, the government is committed to ensuring the workers are not only productive during their working years, but can also live independently and prosperously in old age.

Yassierli mentioned Indonesia is currently still in a demographic bonus period and will gradually face the challenge of an aging population.

The condition needs to be anticipated by ensuring people have adequate preparedness and protection when entering their post-work years.

"We want them to be able to keep working, so they do not depend on the productive workforce," he added.

Therefore, Yassierli said cross-sector collaboration is highly needed to ensure people who have entered their post-work years can still live decently and independently.

One such collaboration is the Financial Services Authority's (OJK) launch of Pension Fund Month 2026, which he said has helped strengthening social protection and improve people's welfare in old age.

"The initiative is considered in line with the government efforts to expand social protection coverage for the entire workforce in Indonesia," he said.

According to OJK data, Indonesia's pension fund literacy index currently stands at only 22 percent. The figure shows public understanding of the importance of preparing financial security for old age still needs to be improved.
