Indonesian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela stated in Jakarta on Thursday that Indonesia hopes the mandates established for the UNGA over the coming year will be successfully implemented under Rahman's leadership.
"Certainly, the election of the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister as UNGA President means he will oversee the various mandates that must be carried out over the next year," Nabyl said during a press briefing.
He emphasized that as one of the UN's six principal organs with the broadest international membership, the General Assembly remains a crucial platform for Indonesia's multilateral diplomacy.
"Indonesia, as a UN member with significant interests, supports the implementation of all programs set for the coming year through the various committees under the General Assembly," Nabyl added.
Rahman assumes leadership of the UNGA's 81st session, succeeding former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who presided over the historic 80th session in 2025.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday (September 8), Rahman pledged to anchor his tenure in multilateralism and pragmatism—prioritizing consensus among member states amid complex international disputes.
"My leadership will be firmly grounded in the UN Charter. I will remain fully committed to the Charter and to the mandates entrusted to the UN by its member states,” Rahman stated.
Acknowledging global political challenges, Rahman noted that while some international issues require time to resolve, member states must remain focused on multilateral cooperation.
"I am not naive enough to think that everything can be resolved quickly and peacefully... However, this should not prevent us from seeking common ground wherever possible, and that is what I will continue to strive for,” he added.
