Geneva (ANTARA News/AFP) - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria said Tuesday that Frenchman Michel Kazatchkine has been reappointed its executive director for another three years.

"I congratulate Professor Kazatchkine on his reappointment as Executive Director," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who chairs the Global Fund`s board.

"He has led the Global Fund through a period of rapid growth that has enabled many countries to make major progress towards achieving the health-related Millennium Development Goals," added Ghebreyesus, who is also Ethiopia`s health minister.

Kazatchkine, described by the fund as "an acclaimed physician and global health expert", was first appointed its executive director in February 2007.

The Global Fund, a public-private partnership, has invested billions of dollars in 150 countries since it was created in 2002, after being kickstarted by donations from software billionaire Bill Gates. (*)
