Tehran (ANTARA News/Reuters) - Iranian security forces have arrested two al Qaeda members in the northwest of the country, the official IRNA news agency reported on Thursday.

IRNA quoted an informed source as saying the two men were arrested two days ago in Sardasht, a town in West Azerbaijan province near the border with Iraq.

Iran had announced in December the arrest of seven al Qaeda members in the same region.

Although the Islamic state rarely reports arrests of al Qaeda members, security forces in the west of the country often clash with Kurdish guerrillas seeking an ethnic homeland in southeast Turkey.

Security forces also grapple with ethnic and religious tension in the southeast where authorities have responded to attacks by Sunni rebels with a spate of hangings. (*)
