?India continues to closely follow the mass protests in Egypt which are an articulation of the aspirations of the Egyptian people for reform. It is hoped that the current situation will be resolved in a peaceful manner, in the best interests of the people of Egypt,? said a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today in New Delhi.
India wishes that Egypt, a fellow developing country with which she enjoys close and traditional ties, will continue to be a strong and stable nation, contributing to peace and prosperity in the region, it said.
Earlier, on Sunday India said that it was concerned at the developments in Egypt.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister, S M Krishna, describing the anti-government protests in Egypt as an `internal affair`, hoped that the African nation finds a solution, acceptable to the protesters, to end the crisis there.
`With reference to what is happening there, it is an internal affair of that country...We hope that a resolution would be found which would be acceptable to those who are demonstrating there,` Krishna told reporters at the Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi after meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
According to reports, an estimated one million people on Tuesday packed Cairo`s Tahrir Square enacting a scene of unprecedented uprising against President Mubarak, amid assurance by the Arab nation`s army to not use force on the protesters.
The anti-government uprising in Egypt intensified on Tuesday as the protesters rejected the new cabinet appointed by Mubarak and clamoured for ouster of embattled president Hosni Mubarak.
Holding posters that read `Mubarak Go to Hell` the people poured into the streets and stand shoulder-to-shoulder in an rare show of unity.(*)
