Expressing solidarity with the Egyptians, under the banner of ?Indian People?s Solidarity March for Egyptians?, students, rights groups activists and volunteers from social organizations, demonstrated here outside the Egyptian embassy.
Cries of `Go Mubarak go` rent the air as the demonstrators raised slogans against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Earlier, addressing the demonstrators, speakers representing Jamaat-e-islami Hind (JIH), All India Students Association (AISA), Students Islamic Organization (SIO), All india Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), Association for the Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association (JTSA), Delhi Malayali Halqa, Asian People?s Solidarity for Palestinians (APSP), in one voice said: Hosni Mubarak must quit but the transition must be decided by democratic process.
They were of the view that the recent demonstrations are being seen as the `breath of change?. However, the president has up till now refused to step down and make way for free and fair elections. The changes made in the Government are nothing but a ruse to stick onto power, speakers added.
They maintained that the embattled Hosni Mubarak should immediately step down, easing the transition to democracy, which will lead to freedom from 30 years of tyranny.
At the end of the demonstration a delegation submitted memorandum to the officials of Egyptian embassy which said: ?The people of Egypt have for long lived off misery and despondence burdened with poverty. President Hosni Mubarak should immediately step down from power easing out the transition to democracy, leading to freedom from thirty years of tyranny.?
Meanwhile, a memorandum was also submitted to the Government of India, asking it to suspend diplomatic relations with Egypt till Hosni Mubarak resigns and an interim government is appointed. And Government should also raise this issue in the UN and pilot a resolution seeking to condemn the dictatorial and despotic rule of Hosni Mubarak. (*)
