Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police have named an Ahmadiyah sect follower a suspect in a recent clash with residents in Cikeusik subdistrict, Pandeglang district, Banten province.

"True, one Ahmadiyah follower, identified by his initial as D, has been named a suspect," the general crime director of the National Police`s detective body, Brig, Gen. Agung Sabar Santoso, said here on Thursday.

The suspect was known as security commission chief of the Jamaah Ahmadiyah Indonesia executive board, he said.

"Right now D is being investigated and may be detained in 24 hours," he said.

Police have so far questioned 10 Ahmadiyah followers in connection with the clash. However, nine of them were interrogated as witnesses.

The clash left three people dead and five others injured.

In related development, police in Banten said Thursday they had arrested another suspect in connection with the clash, bringing to seven the number of people detained in the case so far.

"Another suspect has been arrested, namely KHI, and since Wednesday night he has been detained at the Banten regional police headquarters," Banten police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Gunawan said.

He said KHU, a resident of Pandeglang was allegedly the mobilizer of the mass and also a vandalizer.

A team of police investigators from the national police headquarters, Banten regional and Pandeglang district police commands had until Wednesday questioned around 80 witnesses.

Some of the witnesses are local villagers, police members and Ahmadiyah followers.(*)
