Boediono said the implementation of the system was also believed to be able to give a repentant effect on corruptors or those involved in the tax fraud conspiracy.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono said the government would apply a system of reverse burden of proof to settle the case of tax corruption involving Gayus Tambunan.

"In line with Presidential Instruction number 1 of 2011 on the settlement of tax mafia case the next important thing to do will be applying the method of reverse burden of proof," he said to newsmen after presiding over a meeting of officials concerned with political, legal and security affairs here on Thursday.

Boediono said the process would be more effective to prevent and settle corruption cases.

"With the method state money or people`s money that has been corrupted could be immediately taken by the state or returned to the people. So this is indeed an effective instrument," he said.

Boediono said the implementation of the system was also believed to be able to give a repentant effect on corruptors or those involved in the tax fraud conspiracy.

"If the method is implemented significantly it could become an effective instrument of corruption case prevention and settlement," he said.

On the occasion Attorney General Basrief Arief said the tax corruption case of Gayus Tambunan could be categorized as a general crime, a corruption case and a bribery case for its thorough settlement.

"The application of a reverse burden of proof system has earlier been done on the corruption case of Bahasyim. In that case the bribe money Bahasyim received from businessperson Kartini Mulyadi totaling Rp1 billion could be confiscated quickly," he said.

Bahasyim was proven to have laundered his money totaling Rp60.9 billion and US$681,147.

The money had been put in 11 accounts under the name of his wife and two daughters.

National Police Chief General Timur Pradopo meanwhile said that the system could be applied referring to the law on money laundering.

"We will refer to the law. We will investigate the case based on it," he said.

Other officials attending the meeting were Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Djoko Suyanto and Minister of Justice and Human Rights Patrialis Akbar.(*)
