Marzuki said he hoped the concept of Cyprus`s unification could be implemented well and accepted by the whole Cypriot people.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s House of Representatives (DPR) supports the unification of Cyprus as a sovereign nation within the the United Nations framework, its speaker, Marzuki Alie, said.

He made the statement when receiving visiting Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou here on Wednesday, in the company of the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSAP), Hidayat Nur Wahid, BKSAP`s Deputy Chairman Nurhayati Assegaf and House foreign affairs commission member from the National Mandate Party Muhammad Najib here on Wednesday.

Marzuki said he hoped the concept of Cyprus`s unification could be implemented well and accepted by the whole Cypriot people.

Hidayat Nur Wahid meanwhile said the DPR encouraged the creation of intensive inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries such as for an exchange of experience in settling conflicts. He said Indonesia had experience from settling the conflict in Aceh in which the parliament and the government had played a role in creating a resolution acceptable by all elements in the region.

"We all wish for the best resolution for a united Cyprus," he said.

He said the relations between the two countries had so been gone well. The DPR supports efforts to increase economic cooperation between the two countries especially in the ship building industry. He said 70 percent of Indonesia`s territory is waters while ship building industry in Cyprus has advanced. "We hope through economic cooperation the quality of relations between the two countries could be improved," he said.

He said the relations between the two countries had also developed in various international parliamentary forums and with the visit of Cyprus`s foreign minister it was hoped the relations could become more intensive.

Minister Markos Kyprianou meanwhile said the conflict in Cyprus had now been facilitated by the United Nations. "We are still finding the solution and in principle there is only on Cyprus," he said.

He said the Greek Cypriot Parliament had been in existence since 1960 while it was still non-existent in the Turkish part of Cyprus.

He said the result of unification would now depend upon the resolution on whether the form of government would be federal or not.

"We are glad parliaments of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) would not question the conflict in Cyprus. Besides that we are hoping for support for the unification," he said.(*)
