Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The governments of Indonesia and South Korea have agreed to cooperate in the defense and military fields, Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said.

"There has been a significant increase in Indonesia-South Korea cooperation in the defense field, " the defense minister said when he received South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia Kim Ho Young here on Thursday.

He said that the increase in the countries` cooperation was marked by decrease in the weapon procurement constraints between the two nations such as in the purchase of landing platform dock ships, namely Indonesian warships KRI Surabaya and KRI Makassar.

The Indonesian Navy ordered these ships from South Korea`s dockyard Daesun.

It was also marked by the procurement by South Korea`s navy of maritime patrol ships produced Indonesia`s PT Diregantara aircraft manufacturing industry.

Besides, South Korea also granted armored vehicles for Indonesia`s Marine Corps.

The Indonesian defense minister hoped that Indonesia and South Korea would continue to step up in the future the cooperation they had established so far.

Since the signing of the Indonesia-South Korea Strategic Partnership in 2006, both sides have the commitments to expand cooperation in various fields, including the defense sector.(*)
