Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The government stepped up the building of the Soekarno bridge in Manado, the completion of which had slowed down in the past seven years.

"We are optimistic that the bridge could be finished in 2011, so that many development interests of the people could be fulfilled," head of the North Sulawesi road development agency of the public works ministry Johny Wenur told a hearing with the North Sulawesi legislative assembly here on Tuesday.

The building of the project announced by former President Megawati Soekarnoputri in 2003, is now only 60 pct completed, while the money for the project reached Rp200 billion, not to mention additions from the revised State Budget.

"If the project cannot be completed in 2011, the regional administration needs to cut off the contractors," chairman of Commission III for development projects of the North Sulawesi legislative assembly Sherpa Manembu said.

He said almost Rp 200 billion had already been spent on the project, and there are still no signs of its completion.

"The local people had been restlessly waiting for the completion of the Soekarno bridge for lower cost transportation costs," he said.(*)
