The French presidency said in a statement that the two presidents had spoken by telephone to discuss the situation in Libya.
The two "have agreed on how NATO`s command structure will be used to support the coalition" in Libya," the statement said, without elaborating.
"The two presidents noted with satisfaction that the operations carried out by the coalition had already limited the number of victims in the civilian population and reduced the capacities of Colonel (Moamer) Kadhafi to use force against his own people," the statement said.
"They agreed on the necessity to pursue efforts to ensure the complete implementation of resolutions 1970 and 1973," it said.
Earlier the White House had announced that Obama, Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron had agreed that NATO should play a key role in the command structure of the Libya mission.
White House spokesman Ben Rhodes said they had agreed that "NATO should play a key role in the command structure going forward".(*)
