Aceh Besar (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of elementary school students in Aceh Besar district campaigned on global warming and climate change issues around their schools here Thursday.

These activities involved 360 students from five elementary schools in Kemukiman Cot Keueng, Kuta Baro sub district, Aceh Besar district.

The campaign was done by planting various kinds of trees along the river not far from their school.

The environmental campaign was facilitated by Muslim Aid, a humanitarian agency based in London, England.

Besides planting trees, the students also shared brochures about deforestation threat to the local people.

The Country Director of Muslim Aid, M Mahfuzur Rahman said, the campaign was a series of activities as the world water day which is commemorated on 22 March every year.

"We are also worried about global warming and climate change which make the clean water in the earth becomes diminishing. This happens due to many barren forests," he said.

According Mahfuzur, the campaign involving the students so that they would be able to play an active role in building public awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.

He said, the campaign was the starting point to build awareness of the importance of protecting the environment since an early age. The campaign planned to be conducted annually.

"This campaign is also teaching the children how to maintain clean water sources, so the possibility of future water shortages can be early prevented," said Mahfuzur.
