Pontianak, W Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - PT Paramitra Internusa Pratama, a subsidiary of the oil palm plantation Sinar Mas Group, has been conserving at least eight types of Nephentes sp or Tropical pitcher plants in Kapuas Hulu district.

The eight types of the Nephentes sp were conserved in one hectare of the would be location for the oil palm plantations extensification program in West Kalimantan district of Kapuas Hulu, said Susanto, head of West Kalimantan Sinar Mas group representative office here on Wednesday.

According to him, the eight types of the Nephentes sp are namely N ampullaria type green, N ampullaria type spotted, N ampullaria type spottedxhirsuta, N bicalcarata type red, N bicalcarata type green, N sibuyanensis, N maxima and N mixta.

The eight types are part of 55 kinds of the Nephentes sp obtained in Indonesia, Sudanto said, adding that the company will increase the Nephentes sp conservation area to become 15 hectares.

Meanwhile, Cristian Sanggan,69, a community figure of the Seberuang Kecil hamlet in Semitau sub-district, hailed the Nephentes sp conservation measure conducted by the plantations company.

Head of the Semitau sub-district Andreas Blanda also hailed the Sinar Mas Group`s commitment to preserve the environment by not conducting the peat land clearing.

Previously the Kapuas Hulu district head, AM Nasir warned the palm oil businessmen in the region not to destroy the protected and conservation forest in the region.

The Kapuas Hulu`s width is about 29,850 square kilometers, 56.51 percent of which had been designated for conservation area, AM Nasir said.

"All should keep the conservation forest in a bid to control the Lake Sentarum National Park (TNDS)," AM Nasir added.

AM Nasir also stressed that he will revoke the operational license of any oil palm company for operating in the protected forests.(*)
