"Women should be provided enough knowledge on food diversification, information and advocacy to make them knowledgeable, so they can be decision makers in their families."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian women also need good nutrition in order to reduce maternal mortality, Presidential Special Envoy for Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Nila Moeloek said here Wednesday.

"When we are talking about MDGs, especially the fourth goal (reduce child mortality), we have to see as a whole. So, not only children need nutrition, but also women," she said at the vice presidential palace here Wednesday.

Nila met Vice President Boediono to report Indonesian achievements in reaching the MDGs.

According to her, if women, especially pregnant ones, lacked nutrition, they would suffer from anemia and worm diseases. Moreover, she added, these diseases were the main causes of high maternal mortality.

So far, she said, concern for women was not strong as that for children, ways to make them nutritious.

"Therefore, women should be provided enough knowledge on food diversification, information and advocacy to make them knowledgeable, so they can be decision makers in their families," she said.

Moreover, she still found a discrepancy between women and nutrition. Therefore, she and her staff would conduct an integrated trial in form of primary healthcare, as a basis to intervene, give advocacy and education along with non-governmental and social organizations.

"We`ll monitor it with technology information and the result will be analyzed for its successful implementation," she said.

The goals of the millennium development were quantitative purposes which should be achieved in a certain period of time; especially for poverty reduction should achieved by the 2015.

The goals were formulated since the Millennium Declaration signed in September 2000 by 189 participating countries including Indonesia.

The eight targets of MDGs also concerned human development goals which directly affected the reduction of extreme poverty.

Each goal of the MDGs consisted of targets which had minimum achievement limit to be realized by the Indonesian government in 2015.

The Indonesian government has a commitment to report progress in reaching the MDGs.
