VP attends commemoration of Regional Autonomy Day

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono attended a function to commemorate the 15th Regional Autonomy Day here Monday.

Also present at the event were among others Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, and other regional administration chiefs.

The government is expected to announce the names of provinces, districts and cities with highest rank in the evaluation of the regional administration performance based on the Government Regulation No. 6/2009.

The Regional Autonomy Day is observed on every April 25, based on the Presidential Decree No. 11/1996 on Regional Autonomy.

This year`s theme is "With the Spirit of Regional Autonomy, We Improve the Regional Administration Implementation Performance in Public Services and Regional Innovation."

Over the last one decade, the number of autonomous regions have been growing significantly. There have additional of 205 new autonomous regions, consisting of seven provinces, 164 districts and 34 cities.

In 1999 the national parliament approved two laws on decentralization. Law 22 concerns administrative decentralization, while Law 25 concerns financial administration. The first set of implementing regulations for Law 22 was published early in May 2000.

These two laws indicate a new seriousness about democratic decentralization on the part of the central government.

The condition shows a progress in the implementation of political decentralization. The delivery of public services, however, needs to be improved further.
