Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara(ANTARA News) - The Japanese government is providing scholarships for eight University of Mataram (Unram) students to stimulate their learning spirit, an Unram official said.

The scholarships were being made available through the Yayasan Komatsu Indonesia Peduli (YPKI) which is engaged in industrial development, M Farouk, head of Unram`s student affairs bureau, said here Tuesday.

"All the scholarship recipients are students st the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Their names have been sent to YPKI in Jakarta," Farouk said.

He did not yet know what the scholarships were worth in monetary terms because the would-be recipients were still having their personal data verified.

To qualify for a scholarship, a student must have a minimum academic performance index of 2.75 as stipulated by YPKI.

According to Farouk, the Japanese government provides education grants to Mataram university students because it has faculty of mechanical and electrical engineering that are associated with a developed industry in the country.

The scholarships from Japan is the first education aid provided by institutions from abroad to the University of Mataram.

"This is the first scholarship from abroad. Indeed there is cooperation with Malaysia in terms of scholarship. However, so far there has been no realization. But there are directions to get there," Farouk said.

He hoped that with the education aids from Japanese government can motivate the students to work harder in the fields of science and technology.
