"The forest areas in Kalimantan island which include forest areas in Banjar district are host to some of the world`s lungs so that their sustainability should always be maintained and preserved," Nasrun Syah, secretary of the Banjar district administration, said here Tuesday.
He said , in addition to holding some of the lungs of the world, forests in Kalimantan also play an important role in maintaining the balance of nature so that the island which is administratively divided into four provinces is spared from disaster.
Disasters such as floods are due to illegal logging or other activities that damage forests. However, all these natural disasters have been avoided because forest in Kalimantan were well preserved.
"Keeping and maintaining forests as well as the life within them is not only the government`s duty but also of every component of society," Nasrun said.
He explained, the forest areas in Banjar district was so large that more than it covered half of the region`s territory which was 471,097 hectares.(*)
