Malang, E Java (ANTARA News) - No fatalities or injuries have been reported in a magnitude-6.1 earthquake that struck Malang city and environs in East Java province at 07.15 a.m. on Tuesday.

"The quake centered 156 km south of Balekambang coast or 172 km south of Karangkates has claimed no lives. Neither has it triggered a tsunami warning," spokesman of the Malang district search and rescue team Bagio Setiono said on Tuesday.

No material damage had also been reported in the quake, he said.

Spokesperson of the Malang Meteorology and Geophysics Office Umi Eka Satrina said earlier in the day the epicenter of the quake was located 9.55 degrees southern latitude and 12.55 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 25 km.

The quake which lasted for 10 seconds caused panic among local people and some of them rushed outdoors for fear of an aftershock.

"Thank God, nothing happened. I felt the quake for quite long but it was not so strong," local resident Siska said.

Tuesday`s quake was the latest in a series of quakes that rocked several parts of Indonesia in recent weeks.

On May 12, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook Banda Aceh and environs, causing panic among local people especially those living in storey buildings.

Aceh`s quake came six days after a relatively strong quake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale rocked the northern part of Sulawesi Island on May 6.(*)
