Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Communication is needed to strengthen Indonesia-Malaysia relations and prevent conflict between the two neighboring countries, Malaysian Senate President Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang said here on Tuesday.

"Government-to-government relations between Indonesia and Malaysia have remained strong until now. However, some misunderstandings among our two peoples still happen and they have the potential of triggering conflict," he said at a meeting with members of the Indonesia-Malaysia Journalists Association (ISWAMI) at the Mulia Hotel here.

He said there was a need to hold more dialogue forums involving people and m NGOs from Indonesia and Malaysia to strengthen the relations between the two countries in the future.

Meanwhile, Chairman of ISWAMI Saiful Hadi said his organization had previously organized several dialogue forums involving not only journalist from Indonesia and Malaysia but also politicians and members of big mass organizations from the two countries.

Saiful who is also Chief Editor of state owned ANTARA News Agency said his agency had also worked closely with Malaysia`s BERNAMA News Agency.

On the same occasion, Malaysian Senate member Dr Firdaus Haji Abdullah said Indonesia and Malaysia had almost similar histories and cultures. "The sense of being of the same stock between the peoples of the two countries must be bequethed to the next generation. "Let us increase our second-track diplomacy activities to strengthen Indonesia-Malaysia`s relations," he said.
