Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A lawmaker of the Democrat Party (PD) faction in the House called on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to investigate former PD treasurer Muhammad Nazarudin to assure his legal status over an alleged corruption case.

"What is developing so far is only a corruption allegation addressed to him," Didi Irwadi Syamsuddin said on the sidelines of a House plenary session here on Wednesday.

He said that investigation of Nazaruddin by KPK was important so that he would be assured of his legal status.

"Legal status is important for Nazaruddin because it is a matter of his good name and the PD image," Didi Irwadi, who is also a member of the House Commission III legal affairs, said.

With negative reports so far, the public opinion has been formed that Nazaruddin was involved in the corruption case of the construction of SEA Games athlete house in Palembang South Sumatra.

On Monday, the PD Council of Ethics fired Nazaruddin as the party`s general treasurer following a report by Constitutional Court (MK) Chairman Mahfud MD last week that he had tried to give S$120 thousands in gratification money to MK in September 2010.

He was also mentioned by a suspect as being involved in an alleged Rp3.2 billion worth bribery attempt in the construction of the SEA Games athlete house in Palembang.(*)
