Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - Former President Prof Baharuddin Jusuf Habibie said the utilization of technology in Indonesia is still relatively low compared with the situation in other countries.

"For instance, the number of internet users in Indonesia is still low or an average of only 23.9 percent or one third of the world`s Internet usage rate," he said at the Yogyakarta based-Gajah Mada University on Thursday.

Speaking at the Presidential Lecture titled "Building Competitiveness, Challenges, Options, and Policy" here, Habibie said appropriate technology can increase the value of something or a particular concept which is not worth as something useful.

He said Indonesia needs to enhance innovation and harness technology in order to spur productivity and competitiveness.

"Technology plays an important role in increasing productivity and the nation`s competitiveness. Thus, Indonesia is expected to become a winning nation compared to other ones," he said.

In addition, he said the use of appropriate technology had increased the percentage of industrial development in Indonesia.

For example, the manufacturing sector during the 2008-2010 period recorded an increase to eight percent.

"The increase also occurred in the construction industry of up to 43 percent. It happened due to the massive development or construction raised the number of malls and luxury homes," he added.

On the occasion, the former Minister of Research and Technology also explained that technology is a summary of the application of science that increase the value of something to have the usability of the previous one. (B003/HAJM)
