"The appreciation was given for the city environmental management beating 44 other cities in Asia and the Pacific," Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said here on Wednesday night.
He made the statement when speaking in a talk-tainment themed "Sparkling Smart Surabaya" which also put forward chairman of the Surabaya Indonesian chamber of commerce and industry (Kadin) Dr Ir Jamhadi MBA and city space expert from the Jakarta Institute of Technology Dr Ing Haryo Sulistiarso.
In celebrating Surabaya`s 718th founding anniversary, Risma said the appreciation was received by Indonesia along with a United Nations appreciation.
"We received the appreciation after a presentation in Japan last February," he said.
In response, city space expert from the Bandung Institute of Technology Dr Ing Haryo Sulistiarso called on the city administration to continue making green open spaces reaching 30 pct of its area.
"Green open spaces must not be used for industry or malls, because such change in land function would constitute a deviation of the use of land," head of the city planning laboratory of the Surabaya Institute of Technology said.
In the meantime, Managing Director of Surabaya SmartFM Ferry Iriawan said that his side celebrated this year`s 718th founding anniversary with the "Kampoeng Soerobojo-an" (kampong style) concept covering an outdoor activity presenting a talk-tainment, Surabaya special snacks, Ludruk Gaul (socializing folk theater), and Surabaya musicians," he said.
He said the event also confirmed Surabaya as a Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition (MICE) center. (*)
