"This year we will enforce the law and coordinate with police so that violators will be handled by police if they committed crimes or by the trade ministry if they have administrative violations," Director General of Standardization and Consumers Protection of the Trade Ministry, Nus Nuzula Ishak said.
The director general said that police would act upon violators based on regulations in force if their violations involved crime aspects.
In the meantime, the trade ministry will take sanctions in the form of freezing or lifting of their business licenses if they violated regulations.
Nus Nuzula said that the trade ministry was also conducting field checks to see the labeling in the package of sugar in the market.
Earlier, Internal Trade Director General Gunaryo said the government was auditing the distribution of refined crystal sugar to find out the sources of leakage that caused refined sugar to penetrate the retail markets.
Refine sugar is only designed for food and beverage industries.(*)
