Taipei (ANTARA News/CNA) - Asustek Computer Inc., the world`s sixth-largest PC brand, has named Mandarin pop king Jay Chou as its top designer, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

"We hope to ride on Chou`s popularity to expand our market share in the 1.7 billion-people Chinese-speaking market around the world," said David Chang, Asustek`s chief financial officer.

Chang made the announcement at a news conference to launch the company`s N-series notebook, which carries a Sonic Master audio system to enhance sound quality.

To demonstrate the N-series laptops` impressive sound effects, Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih served as a conductor to lead an orchestra composed of 30 computers in performing Mozart`s Turkish March. Chou was on deck to join the performance.

Noting that he has always sported a diverse and casual style, Chou said he has blended many elements, including music, martial arts, magic, and Baroque in creating the exterior of the newly released N-series laptops. The cover also carries his unique-styled calligraphy to highlight the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures in the design, Chou added.

Asustek`s Chinese market share for notebooks reached 13 percent in 2010, a figure that rose to 15 percent in the first quarter of this year, beating the company`s target, said Chang.

"Our goal is to increase our share in China by 1 percent per year, and the result of the first quarter is better than our expectations," Chang told reporters.

"We expect a stronger demand in the third quarter, but the condition will not be clear until July or August based on the impact of inflation in China," he said.
