Mexico City (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - The torrential rains in Mexico due to the tropical storm Arlene in the states of Mexico, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla and San Luis Potosi, killed 16 people and left more than 20,000 victims and caused material damages.

Hidalgo`s Civil Protection Director Miguel Garcia said in a statement issued on Sunday that in total seven people died in his state in the areas of Huejutla, Arenal, Jacala and Meztitlan.

Also in those areas at least 1,000 people were evacuated as there were hundreds of landslides.

In Tamaulipas state, northeast of the country, one people died when he was walking in a flooded street.

So far, the authorities in the state of Mexico, center of the country, have reported five deaths including two children related to the rains. In this state the most affected areas are Nezahualcoyotl and Ecatepec, where Los Remedios River overflowed.

The federal government declared Nezahualcoyotl and Ecatepec as disaster areas, as water there reached 1.5 meters high and affected more than 400 houses.

In San Luis Potosi in central part of the country, one person died in Tampacan community while in Veracruz, east of the country, one person died in San Andres Tlanehuayacan when a landslide buried two houses.

In the mountainous area of Puebla, in the central part of the country, another woman died due to the rain.
