Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Central Jakarta Municipality will hold a kite festival and contest at the National Monument (Monas) here on Sunday (July 10, 2011).

The kite festival will be participated in by residents of Central Jakarta`s 44 `kelurahan` (urban village administrative units) and other regions in Indonesia, Triyugo Prasetyo, the Central Jakarta tourism office head, said here Wednesday.

Activities during the kite festival will include traditional and creative kite contests and a kite exhibition presenting two and three dimension kites.

Professional kite lovers from Le Gong Kite Society will also demonstrate how to make good kites.

Children could learn how to make good kites and about the functions of kites in the ancient days, he said.

Indonesia has a Kite Museum, which is located in Pondok Labu, South Jakarta.

The Kite Museum was founded by Endang Puspoyo in 2003. Endang has been collecting kites for more than 20 year, and is particularly fond of Balinese kites. Her focus is on "creative kites," which can be shaped to look like animals or birds, or utilize other decorative styles.

Over the last 17 years, she has also given lessons in kite-making at schools in Jakarta and nearby areas.

The museum - the first ever kite museum in Indonesia - has a collection of 350 kites from all corner of the country and from other nations, including traditional and modern kites.
