Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An ASEAN Fun bike 2011 event was held here on Sunday (July 10) to mark the 44th Anniversary of ASEAN on 8 August 2011 and to encourage public awareness about both their health and environmental issues.

ASEAN Foundation Executive Director Dr. Makarim Wibisono and his wife took part in the ASEAN Fun bike, the ASEAN Foundation said in a press statement here Monday.

The ASEAN Fun bike was officially opened by ASEAN Secretary General Dr. Surin Pitsuwan and Foreign Affairs Minister Marty M. Natalegawa.

Nearly a thousand bikers joined the event where the starting point was at East Senayan, central Jakarta.

On 8 August 1967, five leaders - the Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - sat down together in the main hall of the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand and signed a document.

By virtue of that document, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was born.

The five Foreign Ministers who signed it - Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso R. Ramos of the Philippines, Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand - would subsequently be hailed as the Founding Fathers of probably the most successful inter-governmental organization in the developing world today. And the document that they signed would be known as the ASEAN Declaration.

Indonesia is currently the ASEAN Chair. ASEAN now groups ten countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, The Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
