Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will soon have information on tsunami early warning guidelines to help the people develop awareness and early detection of tsunami.

"One of the materials developed by Indonesia through LIPI, in cooperation with the meteorological, climatology and geophysical agency (BMKG), the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo), is Guidelines on Information on Tsunami Early Warning for Broadcasting Institutes in Indonesia," Coordinator the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI)`s People Education and Alertness Iriana Rafliana said in a press statement here Monday.

A series of workshops and focused group discussions had been organized to prepare the guidance, Chairman of BMKG`s Earthquake and Tsunami Center Suharjono said.

The guidance is expected to help improve the effectiveness of the media`s role in disseminating tsunami early warning to the public, he said.

Chairman of the BNPB`s Data and Information Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, information on tsunami early warning was crucial to be disseminated and known by the public.

"People living in coastal area must get information and knowledge on tsunami early warning, so they could anticipate and be on alert of the disaster," Sutopo said.

Indonesia`s geographic condition which is unfavorable for the community to find safety in short notice after a powerful earthquake potential to trigger a tsunami, is a huge challenge, according to him.

The mass media play a very crucial role in disseminating tsunami early warning information, he added.
