"Usually the fatal accidents took place when the regular lanes are fully packed, prompting many motorcycles to use the Transjakarta busway, causing accidents," Assistant Manager of Transjakarta Public Service Agency Iqbal said here Monday.
Iqbal said that to reduce accidents on busways he has always reminded Transjakarta bus drivers to reduce their speed, especially in accident-prone lanes like Jalan Mampang Prapatan, and corridor VI (Ragunan-Dukuhatas).
Iqbal also hoped the public to obey the existing traffic signs, like on busway lanes which are especially meant for Transjakarta buses only.
Data from the Transjakarta BLU showed that in 2011 there had been 54 accidents, namely 4 in January, 8 in February, 12 in March, 10 in April, 11 in May, and 9 in June.
It was a reduction compared to the accidents in the same period of 2010 with 66 accidents.
Of the 10 corridors, Iqbal said, corridor III (Kalideres-Harmoni) has the highest rate of accidents, as many motorists had been using the lane, while there so few pedestrian crossing facilities.
In the meantime, head of the Jakarta Transportation Council (DTKJ) Azas Tigor Nainggolan said that the still many accidents on the busway lanes was caused by the lack of socialization on the Transjakarta busway the prohibition of using the special lanes to the general public.(*)
