Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA News) - Riau`s economic growth in the January-June 2011 period (first semester) in terms of the gross regional domestic product (PDRB) grew 3.66 pct, Riau central bureau of statistics (BPC) said.

"Based on the second quarter and compared with the previous year`s same period the growth reached 3.44 pct," head of the Riau`s BPS Abdul Manaf said in Pekanbaru Friday.

He said Riau`s economic growth without the oil and gas sector has been growing by 2.95 pct compared to that in the first quarter of 2011, and increased 7.54 pct compared to that in last year`s second quarter.

"Cumulatively, Riau`s economic growth from the oil and gas sector in the first semester reached 7.52 pct," he said.

He said the regional administration needs to constantly increase growth in the oil and gas sector, because the effect of the sector is better felt by the community and may reduce Riau`s economic reliance to the oil and gas sector.

On the other hand, he said Riau`s economy has been growing in almost all sectors, with the exception of mining and quarrying which had been contracting by 0.37 pct. The mining sector contributed to the lowest growth rate, namely -0.18 pct, while the highest growth rate came from trade, hotels and restaurants (0.84 pct), and the processing industrial sector (0.82 pct).

Riau`s economy is measured on the basis of the the PDRB on the basic price in the second quarter of 2011, Rp98.075 trillion, while the PDRB based on the constant price of 2000 reached Rp24.9 trillion.

If the oil and gas sector is set aside from Riau`s economy, the PDRB of the existing price and constant price respectively reached Rp60.945 trillion and Rp12.787 trillion. (*)
