Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Police in Medan, North Sumatra, have arrested Syarifuddin whose passport was used by corruption suspect Nazaruddin to travel abroad.

The director of the North Sumatra Police Command`s Criminal Investigation Unit, Senior Commissioner Agus Andrianto, confirmed here on Tuesday Syarifuddin was arrested at his new home in Medan.

Agus did not disclose Syarifuddin`s new address nor the time he was arrested. He said the arrest was made upon a request from the National Police`s Criminal Investigation Department in Jakarta.

Nazaruddin, the former treasurer of the ruling Democrat Party, was arrested in Cartagena, Colombia, at 2am local time on Sunday (Aug 7) after ignoring Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) summonses for the past few months.

The KPK had named Nazaruddin a suspect in connection with the bribery at the SEA Games Athlete Building project.

Nazaruddin left for Singapore on May 23 or a day before the KPK requested for a travel ban for him.

When caught in Colombia, Nazaruddin was with his wife and several other persons.

He went from Singapore to Vietnam and then Cambodia where he then departed on a chartered plane to Bogota through Madrid and the Dominican Republic.

Nazaruddin has drawn public attention following his statements from his hiding that some party elite were also involved in his case.

Many quarters hoped he would explain about the issue later when he returned to the country.
