"This is not yet final as it is still in the form of proposal. The figure comes from the branch offices throughout Indonesia," Head of Communications Affairs of the Correctional Institute Directorate General of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemkumham), Akbar Hadi Prabowo said here on Saturday.
Akbar said that of the total, some 3,424 will directly be free. But it was not yet final because the remissions could just be canceled if there were inmates who committed violations before the August 17, 2011.
Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar is expected to hand over the remissions symbolically at the Special Narcotics Crime Correctional Institute on August 17.
He said that there were now 98,178 prisoners and 52,187 detainees in various prisons throughout Indonesia.
Akbar admitted that the number of inmates this year was bigger than that of last year.
But he did not disclose the percentage of the increase in the number of prisoners this year. (A014)
