Sampit, C Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - At least 6 people drowned and 3 others went missing after Anugerah Jaya speed boat with 40 passengers on board capsized in Central Kalimantan on Wednesday, police said.

Katingan water police spokesman Adjunct Commissioner Sudirman said here on Thursday that the speedboat carrying Lebaran holiday travelers was engulfed by huge waves at Cemeti strait between Kotawaringin Timur and Katingan districts at 8.30 local time on Wednesday miring.

Sudirman said the six fatalities were made up of three women and three man, respectively identified as Tugiyati, Sri Walujeng, Rumaningsih, and Kris, Rudi, Joni, while the missing passengers were M.Nurhuda, Wika, and Nika.

The bodies of all fatalities have been evacuated to Pegatan, Katingan district in Central Kalimantan.

Sudirman said the ill-fated speed boat, skippered by Aliansyah, left Mentawai Baru Hilir in Kotawaringin Timur district at 7 in the morning for Pegatan in in Katingan district but 90 afterward it was hit by big waves and then capsized at Cemeti strait.

As of Thursday the joint rescue workers from Kotawaringin water police and military officials were still searching for the missing passengers of the ill-fated speed boat.
