Caracas (ANTARA News/AFP) - Venezuela`s President Hugo Chavez charged Wednesday that the Venezuelan embassy in Tripoli was "assaulted and totally sacked," demanding that the ambassador and his staff be protected.

Chavez, a loyal ally of embattled Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi, made the remarks at a press conference as fighting raged in Tripoli between rebels and remnants of forces loyal to the regime.

"The ambassador of Venezuela confirms that our embassy in Tripoli was assaulted and totally sacked," Chavez said at a news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We must demand respect for the integrity first of our ambassador and all the personnel who work there," he said.

Chavez has been an unyielding opponent of a NATO air campaign against Kadhafi and has extended his personal support to the Libyan leader on numerous occasions during the six-month-long uprising against him.

Kadhafi`s whereabouts have remained a mystery since rebels stormed Tripoli this week, and overran his compound in the center of the city.

"Let`s hope this madness is stopped," Chavez said. "My impression is that the tragedy of Libya, of that brother people who have a right to exist and to make their own history, is just beginning."

"They have destroyed the country and it wasn`t Kadhafi who destroyed it. That country has set on fire and it wasn`t Kadhafi who set it on fire. It`s the imperial madness."

Venezuela and Libya are both members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
