Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Secretary-General of ASEAN Surin Pitsuwan and European Union Commissioner for International Cooperation on Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva discussed humanitarian issues.

The discussion evolved sharing of experiences and expertise, as well as joint exercises in disaster preparedness, risk reductions and crisis response, the Jakarta-based ASEAN Secretary said in a statement here on Wednesday.

Both Surin and Kristalina agreed to further promote concrete cooperation between the existing mechanisms of ASEAN and EU, namely the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA) and the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO).

They also agreed on the positive developments taking place in Myanmar and look forward to EU and ASEAN working more closely to encourage further development.

Earlier on Monday (Sept. 12) , the EU Commissioner also confirmed EU`s support for Indonesia`s reduction of carbon emissions.

"We are very supportive to countries like Indonesia in their own interest because it is the Indonesian people who will suffer from climate change impacts," she noted

According to Georgieva, the EU is supporting efforts to overcome climate change in two ways, firstly financially by providing financial resources for action in reducing emissions that can be taken and by supporting the initiative of the European private sector for agreement in reducing illegal logging by committing not to buy any products of illegal logging.
