Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - Singapore is now the biggest investor among 18 countries investing in South Kalimantan with a total investment of US$89.6 million, an investment official said.

In total, foreign investment in South Kalimantan reached US$696 million last year with 57 projects, Head of the South Kalimantan Provincial Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD) Ratna Fatmawati said here on Wednesday.

In the first semester of 2011 alone, foreign investment inflows to the province totaled US$163 million with 14 projects, she said.

"Compared to 2010, the total foreign investment in 2011 is far lower. Hopefully, the value of foreign investment until the end of this year will be equal to or higher than that of last year," she said.

She said Singapore remained on top as the source of foreign investment in South Kalimantan with a value of US$89.6 million in 15 projects.

Malaysia came in second with US$42.5 million in 15 projects, followed by British Virgin Island with US$28 million in 7 projects, Australia with US$26.4 million and China with US$26.3 million.

The rest came from Iran, Britain, Hong Kong, Spain, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, and Italy with an investment of US$1 million to US$7 million each, she said.

Most of the foreign companies were engaged in service and trade sectors which in 2010 alone attracted US$69.7 million worth of foreign investment in 41 projects, she said.

In the first semester of 2011, foreign investment in the two sectors increased to US$74.5 million, she said.
