Jakarta (ANTARA News) - As part of the US-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership, US Assistant Secretary of State William R. Brownfield visited Indonesia on September 11-12 to promote cooperation in law enforcement and combating corruption.

Through Assistant Secretary Brownfield`s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs the United States provides more than 10 million US dollars each year to support Indonesia`s efforts to strengthen law enforcement, and judicial institutions.

According to a US embassy?s press release received here Thursday, during his first visit to Indonesia, Assistant Secretary Brownfield met with Indonesian National Police (Polri) Marine Police in Batam for discussions regarding maritime security issues and interdiction strategies in the Malacca Strait.

Subsequent to the discussions, the Indonesian National Marine Police Special Boat Units demonstrated the capabilities of the Special Boat Units that have received equipment and training through US Government support.

In Jakarta, Assistant Secretary Brownfield met with the Indonesian National Police, Attorney General`s Office, Financial Intelligence Unit, members of Indonesian civil society, and other civic leaders.

In conversations with Indonesian counterparts he discussed ways in which the United States and Indonesia can strengthen their Comprehensive Partnership, and foster closer ties through cooperation on a host of important issues, including judicial reform, anti-corruption initiatives, counternarcotics and regional security.

Assistant Secretary Brownfield discussed with Indonesian partners the broad range of US assistance in support of Indonesian government activities to support the rule of law.
