Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Batik Foundation will hold a world batik conference to celebrate National Batik Day, from September 28 to October 2, 2011.

The international conference would be officially opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, chairperson of the Indonesian Batik Foundation Yultin Ginanjar Kartasasmita said here on Tuesday.

The conference will also be highlighted with an exhibition and a cultural night and a fashion show to be participated by national and international designers.

Some master pieces of Indonesian designers Iwan Tirta will also be displayed in the batik exhibition to remember the noted designer who died in July 2010.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jero Wacik said the world meeting on batik was expected to help preserve batik which has been named a world cultural heritage from Indonesia.

"The president has told us that art and culture activities must continuously be socialized and encouraged for our more balanced life," he said.

A number of photos of foreign heads of state and government who are fond of wearing batik, will be displayed in the exhibition.

The works of junior high school students participating in a batik design contest, will also be exhibited.

The peak activity of the National Batik Day will be organized at Pekalongan batik center in Central Java, on October 3, 2011, and attended by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono.(*)
