Jayapura (ANTARA News) - Wamena Airport in Jaya Wijaya District, Papua Province, was gutted by fire early Monday.

The fire, which ravaged among other things the arrival and departure terminals, baggage warehouse and ticket counters, broke out at 2.30 am local time, according to information from several sources.

The fire was probably caused by a short circuit, Second Inspector Tahapary , the Wamena airport police sector chief, said here on Monday.

Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Material losses caused by the fire may reach hundreds of millions of rupiah.

The airport is a plane transit center serving flights to other areas in Papua mountainous region.

Wamena airport is the only airport in Papua mountainous region that can accommodate Boeing and Hercules planes of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI).
