Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia calls for increased cooperation and partnership among UN member countries in facing global challenges

To achieve this, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa in a press release received here on Tuesday, conveyed two key messages that should be done by the international community, in a general debate of the 66th UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters New (Sept 26)

Firstly is the need to strengthen multilateralism, particularly in maintaining the central role of the UN.

"Reform of the United Nations, including its organs, is the key word," Marty said to maintain the world`s body remains relevant in meeting global challenges and continue to uphold multilateralism.

"The end result of these reforms, should make the UN decision-making process more effective, efficient, transparent and inclusive," he said.

Secondly, cooperation and partnership between the United Nations and regional organizations is a necessity. Marty insisted that there should be synergy between the efforts at global and regional level.

According to Marty, it is necessary to transform global challenges into opportunities in order to achieve peace and development for the international community.

Regarding the central theme of the UN General Assembly this year, `The Role of Mediation in the Settlement of Disputes and Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts", Marty exemplifies how Indonesian chairmanship in ASEAN during 2011 to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts in the region.

"As a result, we expect Southeast Asia to remain a region that contributes to security and peace as well as the development and prosperity of the world," Marty said.

Outside the ASEAN region was expected to continue to advocate Asia Pacific regional architecture through the establishment of an ASEAN Community by 2015, added Marty.

"In November, for the first time Russia and the U.S. participated in the East Asia Summit to be held in Bali. An important event for regional architecture," said Marty. (*)
