The epicenter of the quake which struck at 01.06 p.m. on Sunday was in the sea 77 km northwest of Padang at a depth of 10 km, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The temblor was not significant enough to cause a tsunami, the agency said.
Sunday`s quake was strongly felt by local people particularly those staying at storied buildings. However, no fatalities or injuries were reported.
Local resident Elok said he was on the second floor of his storied house when the quake occurred. He rushed outdoors to avoid any eventuality.
"I am still traumatized by the September 30, 2009 quake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale," he said.(*)
